Genetic Carrier Screening Medicare Rebate

The Australian Government has committed $80 million to increase access to affordable preconception genetic testing for residents. If you’re an Australian citizen or resident considering starting a family, here are the rebate you may be eligible for.

Starting November 1st, 2023, Medicare will cover genetic carrier testing for three specific conditions. While not all genetic conditions will be eligible for rebates, this is a significant step towards making these tests more accessible and affordable for individuals and couples planning to start a family.

What’s covered:

Medicare will cover the Core Carrier Test, which screens for cystic fibrosis (CF), spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), and fragile X syndrome (FXS). This test is available once in your lifetime, and it's bulk-billed through Medicare. You can get a rebate of up to $400 to cover the cost.

What you learn:

The Core Carrier Test tells you the chances of having a child with cystic fibrosis (CF), spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), and fragile X syndrome (FXS).

Whos eligible:

To qualify for the Medicare rebate, the following eligibility criteria must be met:

  • Valid & current Medicare number
  • Chromosomally female
  • Pregnant or planning a pregnancy
  • Australian citizen or permanent resident
  • No previous benefit for this test
  • Our registered medical practitioners determine if test is right for you

Payment and Reimbursement:

If you meet the eligibility criteria mentioned above, you have the option to select the bulk-billed test, in which case no upfront payment is required. However, if it is later determined that you do not meet the criteria, an invoice for the full test cost will be issued, which must be paid before the test can be conducted.

Application for Rebate:

After the purchase of the Core Carrier Test is complete, you will be required to provide your Medicare card in your Eugene onboarding journey. The onboarding journey steps will be sent to you via email and can also be accessed by logging into your account. No doctor referrals are needed to access the rebate - we take care of that for you.

Note:

Please note that all other genetic tests available on eugenelabs.com, excluding the Core Carrier Test, are not currently eligible for a Medicare rebate.

No discounts are applicable to the Core Carrier Test, and Eugene gift vouchers cannot be used as a payment method for this specific test.

Carrier screening is not currently covered by private health insurance.
