ABCD1
Associated conditions:
- X-Linked Adrenoleukodystrophy
ABCD1 makes a transporter that moves very long-chain fatty acids into peroxisomes to be broken down. Genetic changes in this X-linked gene are associated with X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy, in which these fats build up and damage the brain, nerves, and adrenal glands. Knowing your genetic status enables early detection, allowing adrenal hormone replacement and, in boys, a stem cell transplant before brain damage occurs.

X-Linked Adrenoleukodystrophy
X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy affects the breakdown of certain fats, which can damage the nervous system and adrenal glands. Outcomes vary widely, and monitoring the adrenal glands and, in some cases, early treatment can be life-changing, so diagnosis matters.
