APOA1

Associated conditions:

  • Cardiovascular disease

APOA1 makes apolipoprotein A-I, the main protein in HDL (good) cholesterol that ferries cholesterol back to the liver for removal. Genetic changes in this gene are associated with an autosomal dominant lowering of HDL and raised cardiovascular risk, or with hereditary amyloidosis, in which the protein misfolds and builds up in the heart, liver, kidneys and nerves. Knowing your genetic status enables monitoring and treatment.

Conditions linked to APOA1

Cardiovascular disease

Cardiovascular disease covers conditions of the heart and blood vessels, such as coronary artery disease. Inherited factors add to lifestyle ones, so knowing your risk supports earlier attention to blood pressure, cholesterol and heart health.
