BARD1 makes a protein that binds tightly to BRCA1, and together they form a repair complex that fixes damaged DNA and keeps cell growth in check. Genetic changes in this gene are associated with an autosomal dominant raised lifetime risk of breast cancer. Knowing your genetic status enables earlier and more frequent screening.
