Comprehensive Carrier Screening with City Fertility is our test designed for donor recipients under the care of City Fertility who want to get a thorough understanding of their risk of having a child with a serious genetic condition when using a particular donor.
It’s the best option for those who want to know their individual carrier status and want to do everything they can to understand their risk of passing a genetic disease to their child.
Comprehensive Carrier screens for 550 inherited genetic diseases that affect children in Australia including:
CFTR — Cystic Fibrosis (CF)
SMN1 — Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA)
FMR1 — FragileX Syndrome
HEXA— Tay Sachs Disease
HBA1/HBA2 — Alpha-thalassemia
It also screens for some gene variants that aren’t covered in our other tests such as hearing and vision loss conditions, or the GBA gene associated with Gauchers disease, which is common in the Ashkenazi Jewish population.
Your carrier testing results help you understand your chance of having a child with a serious inherited genetic condition. As part of this package, one of our genetic counsellors will meet with you to discuss:
Each test includes your individual carrier test, a lab report and a Eugene clinical report of your individual carrier status.
In addition, the Comprehensive Carrier Test for City Fertility patients includes an enhanced clinical review, ensuring your results are carefully matched with your chosen donor:
If you change your donor at any point, we provide a new report to match your carrier test result with your new donor’s result for an additional fee of $195. To support you, we include another genetic counselling consult with this new report.
Your sample is processed at our international medical laboratory that is CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments) and CAP (College of American Pathology) certified.
This means they meet high standards to obtain national certifications and submit themselves to regular inspections. It also means your results can be used to guide your pregnancy plans and be directly actioned at your doctor's office.
Core Carrier Screening includes Cystic fibrosis (CF), Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) and Fragile X. These are three of the most common genetic disease that affect children in Australia. Just 1 in 20 people find out they are carriers of a condition on this test.
Our Comprehensive Carrier Screening option is much more inclusive to risks faced by everyone, because certain conditions are more common in different ethnicities — and its 2023, so most of us are more mixed than we think we are!
8 out of 10 people who do our comprehensive carrier screening test find out they are healthy carriers of at least one condition. Knowing this info in advance is really important because it can open up reproductive options and even significantly reduce the chance of passing the specific condition.
80% of babies born with an inherited genetic condition had no family history of it. That’s why Eugene’s carrier screening is relevant when you are planning a pregnancy, regardless of your family background or history.
1 in 40 partners find out that they have a high risk of having a child with one of the 550 conditions on the test.
Unfortunately Comprehensive carrier screening isn't covered by Medicare just yet. This is because the testing is done by our offshore lab as previously no Australian labs have offered larger panels.

The City Fertility test was designed specifically for circumstances where an individual is working with a clinic-recruited donor as part of their IVF journey.
This test includes everything in an Comprehensive Carrier Test - an individual carrier test, a lab report and a Eugene clinical report of your individual carrier status.
In addition, the Comprehensive Carrier Test for City Fertility patients includes an enhanced clinical review, ensuring your results are carefully matched with a donor. This thorough process features a detailed reproductive risk assessment and a personalized post-results consultation with one of our genetic counselors. You’ll receive two comprehensive reports: one detailing your individual results and another showing the combined risk results with your donor. We hope that this added value provides you with deeper insights and greater peace of mind, helping you make the best choices for your future.
The Comprehensive test for couples only includes one combined risk report between a male and a female (sex assigned at birth). As you both need individual reports, further matching of your results with a donor and a post-results matching consult with one of our genetic counsellors, you need to order two individual tests.
Pro tip: each of you will need an individual Eugene account, please order each test separately using your own details and email address.
This test is not meant to diagnose a person with any of the conditions screened for.
From the moment we receive your saliva sample, the turnaround time to get your results is up to 4 weeks.
Can results be expedited?
Our partner lab is unable to expedite results. Each sample performs differently at the lab, while some samples produce valid results after one round of testing, other samples require multiple testing rounds.
We will send you a notification once your results are available.
The City Fertility donor team will need to send you and your donor’s genetic carrier screening results to the genetic counselling team at Eugene. Once these are received we will do our absolute best to review these as soon as possible. Once your results are ready we will send you an email with a booking link to select a time that suits you for your appointment. Please note that Genetic counselling is provided via Zoom.
Absolutely, we encourage you to attend your results appointments with your reproductive partner. So we have enough time to discuss each of your results, please book two appointments. You will each receive a booking link, please book the appointments back-to-back.
Each test comes with a consult with a Eugene genetic counsellor to discuss your results and any options you want to consider. If you’d like, we’ll also provide specialist referrals to support your ongoing care or forward your results to your GP or specialist.
Plus you can always access our free education tools.
Your saliva sample is destroyed after 30 days. In unusual cases when testing takes longer than 30 days, the specimen will be retained until the report is delivered.
