GLA

Associated conditions:

  • High blood pressure

GLA makes alpha-galactosidase A, an enzyme that breaks down a fatty substance inside cells. Genetic changes in this X-linked gene are associated with Fabry disease, in which this fat builds up and damages the kidneys, heart, nerves and blood vessels. Knowing your genetic status enables early diagnosis, since enzyme-replacement and other treatments can prevent much of the organ damage.

Conditions linked to GLA

High blood pressure

High blood pressure (hypertension) makes the heart and arteries work harder and, over time, raises the risk of heart, kidney and blood-vessel problems. Inherited forms exist, so knowing your risk supports regular monitoring and early treatment.
