LOX

Associated conditions:

  • Aortopathy

LOX makes lysyl oxidase, an enzyme that cross-links collagen and elastin fibres to give artery walls their strength and elasticity. Genetic changes in this gene are associated with an autosomal dominant weakening of the aorta, predisposing to thoracic aortic aneurysm and dissection, a sudden tear that can be fatal. Knowing your genetic status enables imaging surveillance and, when needed, preventive repair.

Aortopathy

Aortopathy refers to weakening or widening (aneurysm) of the aorta, the body’s main artery. Inherited forms can lead to dangerous enlargement or tearing, so carriers are monitored with regular imaging and blood-pressure control, with surgery considered before the aorta reaches a risky size.
