COL4A4
Associated conditions:
- Alport syndrome
COL4A4 makes one strand of type IV collagen, a mesh that forms the filtering membranes of the kidney and also supports the ear and eye. Genetic changes in this gene weaken this mesh and are associated with Alport syndrome, leading to blood in the urine, progressive kidney damage, and sometimes hearing loss. Knowing your genetic status enables early treatment that can slow kidney decline.

Conditions linked to COL4A4
Alport syndrome
Alport syndrome affects collagen in the tiny filters of the kidney, and also the ears and eyes. It can cause blood in the urine, progressive kidney disease and hearing loss, so early monitoring of kidney function and blood pressure helps protect the kidneys.
