FLCN
Associated conditions:
- Renal/urinary tract cancer
FLCN produces folliculin, a tumour-suppressor protein that helps control cell growth in the skin, lungs, and kidneys. Genetic changes in this gene are associated with an autosomal dominant condition called Birt-Hogg-Dube syndrome, bringing benign skin bumps, lung cysts with a risk of collapsed lung, and kidney tumours. Knowing your genetic status enables ongoing kidney imaging for early detection.
Conditions linked to FLCN
Renal/urinary tract cancer
Cancers of the kidney and urinary tract develop in the kidneys, ureters or bladder lining. Several inherited variants raise their risk, so carriers may be offered periodic kidney imaging and urine testing to catch tumours early.
