NF2

Associated conditions:

  • Nervous system/brain cancer
  • Schwannomatosis

NF2 makes merlin, a tumour-suppressor protein that keeps nerve-supporting cells from overgrowing. Genetic changes in this gene are associated with an autosomal dominant condition called NF2-related schwannomatosis, marked by schwannomas on the hearing and balance nerves plus meningiomas. Knowing your genetic status enables early detection through hearing tests and brain scans that protects hearing and allows timely treatment.

Conditions linked to NF2

Nervous system/brain cancer

Cancers of the nervous system and brain arise in the brain, spinal cord or their supporting tissues. Some inherited syndromes raise the risk of these tumours, so awareness supports prompt assessment of new neurological symptoms and, where indicated, imaging surveillance.

Schwannomatosis

Schwannomatosis causes benign tumours (schwannomas) to grow on nerves, which can be painful. They are not usually cancer, so care focuses on managing pain and monitoring, with surgery when needed.
