RET
Associated conditions:
- Endocrine cancer
RET is a proto-oncogene that makes a receptor relaying growth signals into cells. Genetic changes in this gene switch it permanently on and are associated with an autosomal dominant condition called multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2, with near-certain medullary thyroid cancer. Knowing your genetic status enables carriers to consider preventive thyroid removal, since risk is so high.
Conditions linked to RET
Endocrine cancer
Endocrine cancers affect hormone-producing glands such as the thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal glands or pancreatic islet cells. Inherited variants can drive tumours in one or more of these glands, so awareness supports periodic hormone testing and imaging to catch changes early.
